Maldon played host to 42 visitors from Cuijk in Holland for celebrations to mark an amazing 50 years of twinning between our towns. The three-day event started in the Town Hall where the Dutch party, headed by the Cuijk Mayor Wim Hillenaar, his wife Rianne, and Mieke Dengerink, Chair of Cuijk Twinning Association, were welcomed by Jill Hipsey, Chair of Maldon Twinning Association, Deputy Town Mayor Cllr Mark Heard, Deputy Town Mayoress Victoria Heard, and myself and Terry, the Town Mayor’s Consort. My opening speech was followed by warm and amusing speeches form Wim, Mieke and Jill. We then had a wonderful surprise when Wim revealed they had brought from Cuijk a pair of engraved granite tablets (barely liftable!), one for each town, commemorating the 50 years and proudly displaying both towns’ coat of arms.
