A week full of variety

The beginning of July was also very busy with lots of different events. On the 4th I was on the quay for the commissioning of the Blue Mermaid, a replica of the original barge lost in WW2. Later that day I went to Wentworth School Open Evening which was celebrating its 50th anniversary.  It’s a […]

Sports, armed forces and cabbies

The week following the Twinning weekend was a busy one. We were invited by Carl Wakefield, the Principal of Plume Academy, to attend their Sports Awards. Former teacher Dave Ford was a very entertaining guest of honour and the evening was further enhanced by the attendance of his former colleague Bob Barnes, both legendary figures […]

A farewell buffet and parting gifts

All too soon it was time for the Twinning Farewell Buffet which was held in the Cygnet Room of the Swan Hotel. Speeches reflected the wonderful friendships that have endured over the years and celebrated friendships that have just begun! At the end of the evening our visitors gave everyone in the room an individual […]

Twinning Dinner and Dance goes with a swing

Terry and I attended the Twinning Dinner and Dance at Forrester Park. Everyone had a great time- even though some of the dancing to the live band was dangerously close to the clever and magnificent cake, crafted by Wendy Munnion, proudly celebrating 50 years and on display on a small table nearby!

Open Day at Longfields Care Home

On 22nd June Terry and I, accompanied by the Deputy Town Mayor and Mayoress, visited Longfields Care Home on their open day.  We were all impressed by the homely atmosphere and the way so many of the residents were engaged in creative activities they obviously enjoyed. I was particularly taken by the skills of the […]

A Tour of Maldon for our Twinning visitors

After the welcome reception at the Town Hall, everyone met up on the promenade for `Photos in the Park’ courtesy of Mike Ovenden who was our (very patient!) photographer throughout the visit. Maldon Museum opened especially for our Dutch visitors and displayed various artefacts from previous twinning visits. Pride of place was taken by a […]

Welcome to visitors from Maldon’s twin town Cuijk

Maldon played host to 42 visitors from Cuijk in Holland for celebrations to mark an amazing 50 years of twinning between our towns. The three-day event started in the Town Hall where the Dutch party, headed by the Cuijk Mayor Wim Hillenaar, his wife Rianne, and Mieke Dengerink, Chair of Cuijk Twinning Association, were welcomed […]

Maldon in Bloom Presentation Evening

There is always an air of excitement at the annual Maldon in Bloom Presentation Evening and the Town Hall was full to overflowing this year, with extra chairs squeezed into every available space. The evening began with a special presentation to Dorreen Linton who recently stepped down as Chair of Maldon in Bloom. Dorreen can […]

Climate Change event at the Plume Academy

Terry and I attended a public meeting at the Plume Academy, `Climate Change – the Last Straw’, which was hosted by head teacher Carl Wakefield and chaired by John Whittingdale MP. There were presentations from Hattie Phillips; Gareth Redmond-King from the World Wildlife Fund; Darren Tansley from Essex Wildlife Trust; and Professor Sam Fankhauser from […]

More judging and a Cream Tea

Judging the Maldon in Bloom entries is always an exciting and rewarding thing to do and no more so than when visiting schools and pre-schools where, of course, the town’s future gardeners are developing their skills and discovering their enthusiasm for growing flowers and vegetables. So, along with Sue Thomson, Treasurer of Maldon in Bloom, […]
