A visit to Brightlingsea

Sunday 2nd June saw Terry and I in Brightlingsea to attend the Blessing and Reclaiming of the Waters. This is a colourful and well-choreographed annual event which includes a procession through the town, a service by the water and then a small flotilla of decorated boats taking to the river. Amid much noise from crews and guests the water was blessed at a point representing the place where, many years ago, the oystermen of Brightlingsea saw off their Colchester counterparts who were attempting, by force, to claim the oyster beds as their own. So, it’s not quite up there with the Battle of Maldon but it does show it’s not always peaceful on the River Colne!
